After the medieval cathedral burnt down in 1598, it was rebuilt in 1614 according to the plans of the master builder Santino Solari who combined the early baroque style with Roman ideas of construction. It was inaugurated in 1628.

Cemetary St. Peter
Its beginnings go back to the late Roman Juvavum. Surrounded by arcades which include many epitaphs and artistically forged iron bars it can have a mystic effect.

The magnificent Prince Archbishop residence had been the domicile of archbishops since 1120. The building was renewed in the years 1600 to 1619. Especially well worth seeing are the magnificent chambers designed by Lukas von Hildebrandt in 1709 - 1727 as well as the frescos and ceiling paintings from J.M. Rottmayr and M. Altomonte.

Mozart’s square
Located in the centre of Salzburg this square gains special importance by its mighty Mozart monument created by Ludwig von Schwanthaler and erected here in 1842.Moreover the numerous visitors enjoy the world renowned Salzburger Glockenspiel (chimes) which sound daily from the archbishop’s palace.

Getreidegasse

Over the centuries the building experienced various changes for example the masterly recreation of the high altar by Michael Pacher and in its present form by Johann Fischer von Erlach. In 1983 the church was partly repaired and renovated.

Mirabell garden
Not only the castle with probably the world’s most beautiful civil registry office enchants its visitors but also the garden which by order of archbishop Johann Ernst Thun was designed by Fischer von Erlach in about 1690: Sculpture groups, the whimsical "dwarf garden", magnificent flower arrangements, the maze and the hedge theatre leave a lasting impression on all visitors.

Mentioned in a deed for the first time in 1617, it was here in Makartplatz 8 where W.A. Mozart lived from 1773 - 1780. On the first floor, in the former rooms of the Mozart family there is now a museum which documents the history of the house and the life of the Mozart family.
